Reference center for digital creation in France, Le Cube continues with this 3rd edition of the Prix Cube (International Digital Art Prize for Emerging Artists) to promote and support emerging artists and innovative practices in today’s art. This international award for young designers in digital art distinguishes a digital artwork under 2 years performed by artists under 36 years in the fields of interactivity, generativity, network, the Internet or mobility.
A selection committee met to choose the six works nominated for the Prix Cube 2016. The 6 shortlisted artworks will be exhibited during the Prix Cube from 13 to 17 April 2016 in the exceptional setting of the Espace Saint-Sauveur, a desacralized 19th century chapel in Issy-les-Moulineaux A jury of personalities from the cultural, institutional and media finally nominate the winner of the 2016 Cube at the official evening awards ceremony, Tuesday, April 12, 2016.
Digitalarti Media, partner of the Prix Cube 2016 has met the nominated digital artists. We begin presentation with the french artist Barthélemy Antoine-Loeff and his artwork, the immersive installation Ljós.
BARTHÉLEMY ANTOINE-LŒFF (France)
Barthélemy Antoine-Loeff, born in Paris in 1982 where he lives and works, presents Ljós for the Prix Cube 2016. This is an immersive, audiovisual installation with clicking, lights flashing on and off like beacons and other oblique lights creating dreamlike layers. This device is "an invitation to the hypnotic and poetic contemplation of a light phenomena, fluctuating between digital (artificial) and natural (aurora borealis) light. This work is about perception, time, energy and life through two light prisms immersing the space with their aura. […] Ljós is an installation incorporating an evolving a cycle of light. Equilibrium is created that then ruptures, like the passing days or seasons. These cycles reflect our inability to master the intangible, evasive, precious and ephemeral, like the aurora borealis".
In other words, "Ljós is a shot of unbridled energy, demonstrated by the light that disperses in the room around the viewer, to form an aurora borealis". Barthélemy Antoine-Loeff, director and new media artist, founding member of the iduun collective (digital art/performance art, Paris Young Talent Prize 2011), was seeking "new creative means without being restricted by a screen". De facto, "digital was a must", enabling him to '"immerse the viewer in spaces capable of reinventing themselves every time they are viewed. Spaces conceived "cinematically, inspired by optical art in the 60s". With Ljós, as he intended, Barthélemy Antoine-Loeff was able to work "on something very small, yet fragile and extremely powerful".
ljós - an audiovisual installation from Barthélemy Antoine-Loeff
Barthélemy Antoine-Loeff is currently finalising Sól, the new performance by the collectif iduun. Proposed last year at the Théâtre Nouvelle Génération - Les Ateliers in Lyon, this creation will be presented at Mains d’Œuvres in Saint-Ouen in September, at the end of the group residency. At the same time, Barthélemy Antoine-Loeff" is working on two installations: one on the energy that the accumulation of our digital lives requires, the other on climate change and melting ice".
