For the 16th year running, the Elektra festival will take place mid-May in Montreal. Centred on the theme of Post-Audio, this programme offers performances and installations that look at the influence of sound on our psyche and explore the different phenomena of listening…
The programme includes Diamond Version. Carsten Nicolai (alias Alva Noto) and Olaf Bender (aka Byetone), renowned in this field through the famous label Raster Noto, are the two big names in "microscopic-music" behind this new project signed with Mute. More of the same, the live-set Alpha by Julien Bayle should result in a colourful explosion of sounds, images and algorithm sequences.

Likewise for Matthew Biederman and Pierce Warnecke (Percpections2). Absorbing electronic music, audio-visual performances and immersive experiences set the tone. With Lumophore II and Cyclotone II, Paul Prudence will play upon the colour codes of atoms and the visible stigma of particle physics. The OUCHHH collective will enjoy mixing up forms and topology with two creations (H OM E OMOR PH ISM and Solenoid). Myriam Bleau will get back to basics with the use of a new kind of drum that integrates sensors. Martin Messier will distort and manipulate old 8mm projectors (Projectors). Alex Augier will spatially project data flow (OQPO_OOOO). Lastly Maxime Damecour will test a new interface that enables the manipulation of different elastic materials, a hybridisation of kinetic sculpture and an acoustic device.

Installations can be found in the Museum of Contemporary Art (Nyloïd by Cod.Act) and the Cinémathèque québécoise (Topologies by Quayola), as well as in the famous Black Box Concordia University (Resonant Architecture by the Art Of Failure collective)… True to form, the festival will mainly take over Usine C, an iconic multidisciplinary centre of creation and broadcast in Montreal.
’Such a buzz had been created by sound art, amongst Montreal’s community as well as internationally, so it was obvious that we had to let the local public take advantage of it by presenting a large-scale event incorporating the extent and diversity of this artistic practice.’ Alain Thibault, artistic director of ELEKTRA.
Under the impetus of its artistic director Alain Thibault and his team, Elektra has given digital arts its credentials, in particular through audio-visual performances with each edition offering up a panel of international artists (electronic music, multi-media images, design, sound installation, interactive artworks…). Not forgetting the local scene, as reflected this year for example by the series of Electrochoc concerts devoted to new digital music that will take place at the Conservatory with young composers (Samuel Béland, Michèle Bernier-Martin, Simon Chioini, Guillaume Cliche, Line Katcho, Xavier Madore, Fernando Murillo, Matthew Schoen).
In 2007, Elektra broadened its horizons by bringing digital art professionals together (producers, agents, distributors, curators, journalists and event organisers) at the MIAN meetings (International Digital Art Market) now an annual event in addition to the festival. For this 2016 edition, the place to be is Centre Phi, on the 14th and 15th May from 1pm to 5pm. Since 2012, the festival has become even more enticing by offering an International Digital Arts Biennial, the BIAN, aimed at the emerging market in this area and to further showcase the creative proliferation through a large trade fair, mirroring to some extent the contemporary art arena. The next edition will be held in 2016.
Consistent with the 2016 theme, a brand new event is taking shape: the BIAS (Biennale International Sound Art Biennial). The public can take their pick of exhibitions, performances and satellite events until June, as an extension of the festival programme, an invitation to continue investigating audio perception in the digital age and beyond sound…
